A cancer survivor does not have to have survived cancer himself or herself. Many cancer survivors are family members who have lost loved ones to cancer. This is the story of Maria Emilia Strickland, written by her father Randy Strickland. Maria battled brain cancer for four years, and, on December 11, 2006, at age 6, lost her battle. Randy writes this account to honor Maria: her life, her courage while enduring the many difficult treatments, and her loving spirit toward the many doctors, nurses, and staff who were her constant companions on her journey. Maria’s father Randy has kept her memory alive in many ways, for example by joining the Cancer Coalition to represent the cause of children with cancer, sharing her story, and being a survivor. Alabama continues to build on its very successful history of cancer control. Comprehensive cancer control has been defined as an integrated approach to reducing cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality through prevention, early detection, treatment, and palliation. This comprehensive approach involves systematic assessment of state cancer concerns to ensure that important priorities are identified, resources are used efficiently, gaps in education and services are identified, and duplication of efforts is avoided. Lifestyle choices will be the health focus for the 21st century. Peer education, community-based interventions, and better access to preventive care will help Alabamians make better lifestyle choices and help the state continue to make progress in the battle against cancer.
